About Kenneth Hayes Miller

Among the American painters who turned their attention to the everyday life of New York between the wars, few looked as carefully at the city's shop windows and shoppers as this teacher-painter from the Fourteenth Street School. Working from a studio near Union Square through the 1920s and 1930s, he built solid, sculptural figures of middle-class women browsing department stores, applying the lessons of Renaissance composition to distinctly modern subjects. He taught at the Art Students League for decades, shaping students including Reginald Marsh, Edward Laning, and Isabel Bishop. The result is urban realism with real weight to it - quiet, observant, and surprisingly current in its interest in consumer life.
