About Joaquim Pla Janini

Among the great Catalan pictorialists, he holds a particular place: a photographer who treated the lens with the patience of a painter, working in carbon, bromoil, and gum bichromate long after most of Europe had abandoned such labor-intensive processes. Born in 1879 and active in Tarragona and Barcelona through the mid-twentieth century, he built misty landscapes, still lifes, and quiet interiors that owe as much to Corot and the Barbizon school as to photographic modernism. The surfaces glow rather than sharpen. For a contemporary viewer, his prints offer something increasingly rare on the wall: a photograph that behaves like a drawing, hushed and handmade.
