About Theo Van Doesburg

Few artists pushed abstraction toward pure geometry as relentlessly as this Dutch painter, theorist, and provocateur. A co-founder of De Stijl in 1917 alongside Piet Mondrian, he championed a visual language of primary colors, right angles, and flat planes - then broke with Mondrian over the diagonal, introducing what he called Elementarism in the mid-1920s. His writing and typography shaped the Bauhaus as much as his canvases did, and his late counter-compositions feel startlingly close to graphic design a century before the term meant much. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is the rigor: cool, deliberate, mathematical work that still reads as quietly radical.
