About Michael And Satan
The painting you're looking at comes from Raphael Sanzio, the Urbino-born Renaissance painter whose brief life from 1483 to 1520 produced some of the most balanced and humane work of the High Renaissance. Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan, painted in 1518 for Francis I of France, shows him at the height of his powers: dynamic composition, anatomical confidence, and a clarity of narrative that Vasari would later hold up as the standard against which all painting should be measured. For a contemporary viewer, Raphael offers something rare in religious art - drama without melodrama, and a sense of order that still reads as deeply alive.
