About Richard Edward Miller

One of the central figures of the Giverny Group, this American Impressionist spent the early 1900s painting alongside Frederick Frieseke and Lawton Parker in the village Monet made famous. Born in St. Louis in 1875 and trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he developed a signature subject: women in dappled light, often in interiors or sun-flooded gardens, rendered with broken color and a decorative sense of pattern. After returning to the States in 1916, he taught for decades at the Stickney Memorial Art School in Pasadena. His luminous figural work remains a high point of American Impressionism, prized for its quiet intimacy and confident handling of light.
