About Johannes Molzahn

Few German modernists pushed cosmic abstraction as far as this Weimar-era painter and graphic designer, whose canvases pulse with orbiting forms, mechanical geometries, and an almost mystical sense of celestial motion. Born in 1892, he moved in the orbit of the Sturm gallery alongside figures like Klee and Kandinsky, and his work fused Expressionist energy with the rational rigor of Bauhaus typography, a discipline he taught in Magdeburg and Breslau before the Nazis branded him degenerate and forced him to America. His paintings sit at the rare intersection of spiritual searching and engineered precision, which gives them a strange contemporary pull a century on.
