About Boris Grigoriev

Few portraitists of the early twentieth century could pin down a sitter as ruthlessly as this Russian émigré, whose drawings and paintings stripped faces back to something between caricature and confession. Trained in St. Petersburg and shaped by the ferment of pre-Revolutionary Russia, he left for Europe in 1919 and built his reputation across Paris, Berlin and New York, moving in the same circles as Chaliapin, Gorky and Rachmaninoff, all of whom he painted. His figures carry the angular psychological edge of Russian modernism without ever losing their humanity. For collectors drawn to portraiture with bite rather than flattery, his work still rewards a long look.
