About Hans Bollongier

Active in Haarlem during the 1620s through 1670s, this Dutch Golden Age painter built his reputation almost entirely on flower pieces - a specialty that demanded both botanical precision and a painter's eye for theatrical staging. He trained in the orbit of the Bosschaert dynasty and worked at the height of tulip mania, often featuring the prized Semper Augustus among carefully balanced arrangements of roses, anemones, and carnations against dark grounds. His compositions feel quieter than the baroque excess of contemporaries like Jan Davidsz. de Heem, favoring symmetry and clean drawing over abundance.
