About Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen

Few painters have documented a fleet the way this Danish-born American did. Arriving in New York in 1873, he set up shop in Hoboken and proceeded to paint somewhere north of six thousand portraits of ships - clippers, steamers, tugs, yachts - working with such precision that maritime historians still use his canvases as reference for rigging and hull detail. Trained briefly at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen before fleeing conscription, he became the unofficial portraitist of the late nineteenth-century Atlantic shipping world. For anyone drawn to the working sea - the era of coal smoke, canvas, and iron hulls - his paintings remain the most exacting record we have.
