About James Ward

Few British animal painters of the Romantic era pushed Rubens quite as hard as he did. Working from the 1790s into the mid-nineteenth century, he made his name with monumental canvases of livestock and wild beasts, most famously Gordale Scar, a thunderous landscape that helped define British Romanticism's appetite for the sublime. Trained initially as an engraver alongside his brother William, he brought a printmaker's discipline to even his loosest studies, whether of trees, gulls, or a child in a top hat. The drawings reward close looking: muscular, observant, alert to weather and weight, with none of the sentimentality that drags down lesser animal art.
