About Fh Varley

Among the original Group of Seven, he was the portraitist and the weather-watcher - the one most interested in atmosphere, mood, and the human figure when his colleagues were chasing pure landscape. Born in Sheffield in 1881 and trained at the Antwerp Academy before emigrating to Canada in 1912, Frederick Horsman Varley brought a European sense of psychological depth to Canadian wilderness painting. His Georgian Bay canvases of the 1920s, with their churning skies and restless water, and the cool green spiritualism of his later British Columbia work, remain some of the most emotionally charged paintings of the period. The drama still reads instantly today.
