About Bruce Crane

Few American painters worked the quiet end of the spectrum as patiently as this turn-of-the-century Tonalist, whose landscapes traded drama for atmosphere and weather for mood. Born in 1857, he trained briefly with Alexander Wyant and absorbed the Barbizon lessons firsthand during a stay in France, returning to develop a softer, more meditative idiom rooted in the American Northeast. By the 1910s and 20s he was producing the autumnal fields and snow-dusted woods he became known for, painted from memory rather than the motif. For collectors drawn to hushed palettes and the slow looking those pictures reward, his work still holds its ground.
