About Anton Romako

Few nineteenth-century Austrian painters sit as awkwardly, or as interestingly, between eras as this one. Trained in the polished Viennese academic tradition under Carl Rahl and active from the 1850s through the 1880s, he developed a nervy, psychologically searching portrait style that his contemporaries found unsettling and later generations recognized as a precursor to Austrian Expressionism. Oskar Kokoschka openly admired him. His sitters look caught mid-thought, rendered with a slightly off-kilter line and an emotional candor rare for the period. For collectors drawn to portraiture that feels alive rather than embalmed, his work offers a quiet bridge between Biedermeier composure and the raw modern psyche to come.
