About Jakob Weidemann

Norway's first major abstract painter, he pushed Nordic modernism into territory it hadn't dared go before. Born in 1923 in Steinkjer, he trained in Stockholm during the war years and absorbed the lessons of European modernism before returning home to apply them to a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility. His mature work from the late 1950s onward dissolved forest floors, lichen, and snowmelt into shimmering fields of color, earning him a place alongside the great lyrical abstractionists of postwar Europe. For viewers drawn to abstraction that still breathes with the natural world, his paintings offer something rare: pure color that remembers where it came from.
