About Ando Hiroshige
The last great master of the ukiyo-e landscape, working at the moment the genre tipped from celebrity portraiture toward the open road. His Tōkaidō series of the 1830s mapped the post stations between Edo and Kyoto in atmospheric weather effects that Hokusai, for all his graphic punch, never quite matched. Rain, snow, and mist do real work in these prints, dissolving the woodblock line into something genuinely moody. Van Gogh copied him directly; Whistler and the Impressionists absorbed his cropping and flattened space. Hang one of these stations on a wall today and you get travel, weather, and a quiet sense of passing through.
