About Jacob Jordaens

After Rubens died in 1640, the title of Antwerp's leading painter passed to this prolific Flemish Baroque master, who had trained alongside Van Dyck in the studio of Adam van Noort. Born in 1593, he built a career on robust, earthy figures and theatrical lighting drawn straight from Caravaggio's example, often working from his own family as models. His tavern scenes and mythological allegories trade Rubens's idealized grandeur for something heartier and more human, with thick paint and ruddy color. For collectors drawn to Baroque drama without the courtly polish, his work offers the same period vocabulary spoken in a louder, more direct voice.
