About William Henry Dethlef Koerner

Born in Germany in 1878 and raised in Iowa, he became one of the defining illustrators of the American West during the golden age of magazine fiction. Trained under Howard Pyle at the Brandywine school, he brought that lineage's painterly seriousness to commercial work, producing hundreds of covers and interior illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post throughout the 1920s and 30s, many of them for Western serials by Zane Grey and Eugene Manlove Rhodes. His cowboys, ranch women, and Plains scenes carry real anatomical authority and a cinematic sense of narrative pause. For collectors drawn to Western imagery with genuine craft behind it, his paintings remain among the most rewarding to live with.
