About Jean Baptiste Greuze

Few eighteenth-century painters mastered the art of the loaded glance quite like this French moralist of the Enlightenment. Working from the 1750s onward, he built a career on sentimental genre scenes and tender, slightly knowing portraits of young women, often with a symbolic prop, a dead bird, a broken pitcher, an unlatched cage, that hinted at lost innocence. Diderot championed him as the painter France needed; the Académie famously refused to accept him as a history painter, a slight he never quite forgave. For modern viewers, his portraits still register as remarkably direct. The faces feel observed rather than performed, intimate work that rewards close looking.
