About Benedetto Bonfigli

Few painters capture the moment Umbrian art tipped from late Gothic into early Renaissance quite as clearly as this fifteenth-century Perugian. Active from the 1440s until his death in 1496, he worked in a register of delicate line, jewel-bright color and gold-ground decorum even as Florentine ideas of space and volume were pressing in around him. His great commission, the fresco cycle in the Cappella dei Priori in Perugia, established him as the city's leading painter and a forerunner to Perugino. For modern eyes, his panels offer that particular Umbrian sweetness: serious figures, lyrical drapery and a quiet, almost devotional stillness.
