About Giovanni Odazzi

A Roman painter working at the turn of the eighteenth century, he trained under Giovanni Battista Gaulli, better known as Baciccio, and absorbed the late Baroque language of grand ceiling frescoes and theatrical sacred drama. Born in 1663, he spent his career largely in Rome, contributing altarpieces and frescoes to churches including Santi Apostoli and San Marcello al Corso, where his fluid figures and softened palette mark the gentle drift from high Baroque toward the lighter Rococo sensibility. For collectors drawn to Italian religious painting, his work offers that particular Roman warmth - devotional subjects handled with grace rather than heaviness, and a draftsman's confidence behind every gesture.
