About Paulus Bor

Among the Dutch Caravaggisti, this Amersfoort painter cuts a stranger figure than his Utrecht peers. Born around 1601, he spent formative years in Rome in the early 1620s, where he was a founding member of the Bentvueghels, the rowdy confraternity of Northern artists. But where Honthorst chased dramatic candlelight, Bor pulled toward something quieter and more enigmatic, painting introspective biblical and mythological women with smooth, almost porcelain surfaces and a curious emotional stillness. His figures hover between Caravaggesque realism and a cooler classicism, often caught in private moments of reverie. For modern viewers, it's that psychological hush, more than any theatrical lighting, that keeps his work compelling.
