About Taborda Vlame Frey Carlos

A Portuguese painter active in the early sixteenth century, Frey Carlos ran one of the most productive workshops in Lisbon during the reign of Manuel I. A Hieronymite monk based at the monastery of Espinheiro near Évora, he absorbed the precise modeling and luminous detail of Flemish masters like Quentin Massys, then filtered that influence through a distinctly Iberian sensibility for color and devotional intensity. His altarpieces, including a particularly fine Annunciation, balance northern realism with the contemplative stillness suited to monastic life. For viewers drawn to the quiet rigor of early Netherlandish painting, his work offers that same patient attention to surface, gesture, and sacred meaning.
