About Absolon Stumme

Working in Hamburg at the close of the fifteenth century, this Late Gothic painter belonged to the North German workshop tradition that fused Westphalian solidity with the new realism filtering up from the Netherlands. His contribution to the Dome Altar of 1499, painted alongside Hinrik Bornemann, places him squarely in the circle of Hanseatic masters producing devotional panels for the wealthy merchant churches of the Baltic coast.
