About Chase William Merritt

Among the American Impressionists who came of age in the 1880s, few handled paint with the assured looseness of this New York-based portraitist and genre painter. Born in 1860 and a founding member of the Ten American Painters in 1898, he trained in Munich under Frank Duveneck before absorbing the lighter palette and broken brushwork of his French contemporaries. His Venetian scenes and intimate domestic interiors balance bravura handling with quiet observation, the figures often caught mid-thought rather than posed.
