Few figures loom larger in the history of outsider art than this Swiss draftsman, who spent the last three decades of his life in the Waldau psychiatric clinic near Bern producing one of the most ambitious bodies of work in twentieth-century art. Between his admission in 1895 and his death in 1930, he filled some 25,000 pages with a self-mythologizing epic blending dense geometric ornament, musical notation, collage, and text in a vision he called his "Imaginary Travels." Jean Dubuffet championed him as the cornerstone of Art Brut, and his densely patterned compositions still feel startlingly contemporary - hypnotic, maximalist, and entirely his own.
