About Vilhelm Hammershoi

Working in Copenhagen at the turn of the twentieth century, this Danish painter made quiet, grey-toned interiors his life's subject. Rooms at Strandgade 30, where he lived with his wife Ida, became the stage for figures seen from behind, half-open doors, and light that seems to hold its breath. He trained under Peder Severin Krøyer but rejected the bright palette of the Skagen painters in favour of a restrained scale of dove grey, putty, and black. Rediscovered in the 1990s and admired by filmmakers and photographers ever since, his work rewards slow looking - a useful antidote to a noisier visual culture.
