About Julius Leblanc Stewart

An American expatriate who spent his entire career in Paris, he became the chronicler of Belle Époque high society from the inside. Born in 1855 to a wealthy Philadelphia sugar magnate, he trained under Gérôme and Cabanel and was close enough to the social circuit he painted to be called the "Parisian from Philadelphia" by his peers. His large group portraits of yachting parties, salons, and elegant gatherings carry the polish of academic figure painting with a journalist's eye for who was wearing what and standing where. For contemporary viewers, his canvases offer something rare: late nineteenth-century luxury rendered without irony, by someone who actually lived it.
