About Luke Fildes
Few Victorian painters built a reputation on social conscience the way this one did. Trained as an illustrator for The Graphic in the 1870s, he brought a journalist's eye to oil painting, translating sketches of London's poor into large-scale canvases that hit the Royal Academy like documentary evidence. The Doctor, painted in 1891 after the death of his own young son, became one of the most reproduced images of its century, a quiet study of helplessness and care by lamplight. For modern viewers, his work still does something rare: it treats ordinary suffering with the gravity usually reserved for history painting.
