About Balthasar Beschey

Working in eighteenth-century Antwerp, this Flemish painter built his reputation on small, jewel-like religious and mythological scenes that consciously looked backward to the golden age of Rubens and Van Dyck. Born in 1708, he became dean of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke and ran a productive workshop that trained his own brothers and a generation of local painters, helping keep the Flemish Baroque tradition alive well into the Rococo era. His Holy Family compositions show the qualities collectors prized then and still respond to now: smooth finish, tender domestic warmth, and figures arranged with a quiet, classical poise that rewards close looking.
