About Tom Thomson

Few painters compressed so much influence into so short a career. Working in the Ontario backcountry between roughly 1912 and his mysterious death in Algonquin Park in 1917, this Canadian painter developed a fast, sketch-on-panel approach loaded with thick, decorative colour and serpentine line. His small oil panels, painted outdoors on canoe trips, became the seedbed for the Group of Seven, which formed after his death and effectively built a national style on his shoulders. What draws viewers now is the immediacy of it - paint laid down quickly, weather and light caught in the moment, a northern landscape rendered without sentiment but with real affection.
