About Walter Macewen

Born in Chicago in 1860, this American expatriate built his career in Paris and the Netherlands, training under Cabanel and Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian before settling into the cosmopolitan circle of Americans abroad. He became known for quiet, narratively charged interiors in the Dutch tradition - women reading letters, examining jewelry, caught in moments of private absorption - alongside genre scenes from Holland that owed a clear debt to seventeenth-century masters like Vermeer and Terborch. There's a restraint to the work that feels modern even now: muted palettes, careful light, and a refusal to spell out what his figures are thinking. It rewards slow looking.
