About Louis Leopold
Few painters bridged the chaos of revolutionary France and the polished neoclassicism that followed with quite the same documentary eye as Louis-Léopold Boilly. Working from the 1780s into the 1840s, he became the great chronicler of Parisian street life, popular theater, and the small humiliations of crowds - a genre painter with the precision of a miniaturist and the wit of a satirist. He coined the term trompe-l'œil in 1800 and pushed the technique to dizzying ends. For viewers today, his scenes carry the same pleasure as a good novel: dense with character, observed without sentiment, and quietly alive on the wall.
