About Stan Poray

A Polish-American painter who built his career in California after emigrating from Krakow, where he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under the long shadow of European symbolism. He settled in Los Angeles in the 1920s and became part of the city's early modernist current, working in oils with a palette that pulled equally from Eastern European folk tradition and the warm light of Southern California. His figurative work tends toward the allegorical, with mothers, harvests, and earth-bound symbolism recurring throughout. For viewers drawn to early twentieth-century painting that bridges Old World mysticism and New World color, his canvases hold a quiet, grounded weight.
