About Paul Cornoyer

Few American painters caught the wet, gaslit mood of turn-of-the-century New York quite like this St. Louis-born Tonalist. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris in the 1890s, he absorbed the soft atmospheric handling of the Barbizon painters and brought it home to Manhattan, where William Merritt Chase encouraged him to settle. The result was a long series of rain-slicked street scenes—Madison Square, the Flatiron, Washington Square—painted in muted greys, ochres, and dusky violets. For viewers today, the appeal is the hush: a city we know as loud rendered as something contemplative, almost European, lit from within by reflected light.
