About Cassius Coolidge

Few American painters have been seen by more people and credited by fewer than the Massachusetts-born commercial artist behind the Dogs Playing Poker series. Commissioned in 1903 by the Brown & Bigelow advertising firm of St. Paul, Minnesota, he produced sixteen oil paintings of anthropomorphic dogs gambling, smoking, and getting into mild trouble—images that quietly became one of the most reproduced bodies of work in American visual culture. Trained largely by doing, he also invented Comic Foregrounds, the carnival cutouts you stick your face through. His paintings sit at the strange, satisfying intersection of folk art, satire, and turn-of-the-century parlor humor.
