About Maurice Prendergast

Among American modernists, few painters translated European post-Impressionism into something so distinctly their own. Working primarily in watercolor and oil, he built scenes from mosaic-like dabs of color, flattening figures into rhythmic patterns of parasols, sailboats, and seaside crowds. His 1890s travels to Paris and Venice put him in early contact with Cézanne and the Nabis, and by 1908 he was exhibiting with The Eight, the group that cracked open American academic painting. The result is work that feels both decorative and structurally serious - park promenades and harbor afternoons rendered with the patience of a tapestry maker and the eye of a colorist.
