About Bjo Nordfeldt

Few American modernists moved through as many idioms as B.J.O. Nordfeldt, the Swedish-born painter and printmaker who arrived in the United States as a child in 1891 and spent the next half-century absorbing and reworking the European avant-garde for an American audience. He developed the white-line woodcut technique in Provincetown around 1915, a method that would shape a generation of New England printmakers. His Santa Fe years in the 1920s produced angular, color-saturated southwestern landscapes informed by Cézanne and Cubism. For collectors drawn to early American modernism with genuine experimental bite, his work occupies a quietly essential place between European theory and frontier subject matter.
