About Gaetano Gandolfi

Among the last great practitioners of the Bolognese tradition, this eighteenth-century painter and draftsman carried the Carracci legacy into the late Rococo with unusual energy. Born in 1734 and active until 1802, he trained at the Accademia Clementina and absorbed Venetian colorism on a formative trip to Venice in 1760, where Tiepolo's airy compositions left a lasting mark. His drawings — fluid pen-and-wash studies of saints, mythological scenes, and the occasional grotesque head — are prized for a confident line that records the act of thinking on paper. For contemporary viewers, the appeal lies in that immediacy: drawings that feel alive rather than rehearsed.
