About John Brett

Few Pre-Raphaelites took the movement's "truth to nature" doctrine quite as literally as this English painter, who treated geology and landscape with the precision of a field scientist. Born in 1831, he came under Ruskin's influence in the 1850s and produced meticulously observed works like Val d'Aosta and The Stonebreaker, where every pebble and blade of grass holds equal weight. Later in his career he turned almost exclusively to coastal scenes, painting the cliffs and seas of Cornwall and the Channel with the same forensic attention. His paintings reward slow looking, the kind of viewing where the longer you stand in front of them, the more they give back.
