About Sir John Lavery

Trained in Glasgow, Paris and at the Académie Julian, this Belfast-born painter brought a loose, atmospheric brushwork home from France and made it the language of Edwardian society portraiture. He was one of the Glasgow Boys in the 1880s before Whistler's influence pushed him toward the cooler tonal harmonies and elegant figure studies that defined his mature work. Knighted in 1918, he served as an official war artist and painted everyone from Winston Churchill to the women of the suffrage movement. His portraits still feel modern because he painted personality rather than status, with a light touch that flatters quiet rooms and considered interiors.
