About Jan Asselyn

Few seventeenth-century Dutch painters did more to import the warm, golden light of Italy into northern art. Asselyn (c. 1610-1652) was among the Dutch Italianates, painters who travelled south and returned with a palette steeped in Mediterranean sun, applying it to harbour scenes, ruins, and pastoral landscapes that suddenly made Holland look a little cool by comparison. He is best remembered for a single dramatic departure: a life-sized swan, wings flared against an unseen threat, painted with a ferocity rare in Dutch art of the period. His landscapes reward viewers who like quiet light and considered composition over spectacle.
