About Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

Few painters drew a line like Ingres. A pupil of Jacques-Louis David, he carried Neoclassical discipline deep into the nineteenth century, but bent it toward something stranger and more sensual - elongated necks, impossibly smooth porcelain skin, anatomy quietly distorted in service of pure contour. Born in 1780, he spent formative years in Rome, returning to France to become the standard-bearer of classical drawing against Delacroix and the Romantics. His portraits, in particular, remain studies in psychological precision dressed as cool restraint. For contemporary viewers, the appeal is that tension: pictures that look composed and proper at first glance, then quietly refuse to behave.
