About Ferdinand Victor Eugene Delacroix

The leading figure of French Romanticism, he painted with a restless, kinetic brush that made his contemporaries in the neoclassical camp deeply uncomfortable. Born in 1798, he came up arguing with Ingres about everything that mattered: color over line, emotion over order, the present over the antique. His 1830 painting Liberty Leading the People remains the visual shorthand for revolution itself, and his journals, kept for decades, shaped how later artists thought about their own practice. The Impressionists owed him a real debt, particularly for his handling of color. His work still feels urgent, charged with the conviction that paint can carry the full weight of human feeling.
