About Pieter De Hooch

Working in Delft alongside Vermeer in the late 1650s, this Dutch Golden Age painter built quiet domestic scenes around something his contemporaries rarely managed: deep, architectural light. Courtyards open into back gardens, kitchens lead to sunlit doorways, and the eye is pulled through one room into the next by carefully measured pools of brightness. Trained in Haarlem and Rotterdam before settling in Delft around 1652, he refined a kind of pictorial geometry that influenced de Witte and arguably Vermeer himself. His interiors reward slow looking - the longer you live with one, the more the spatial puzzle reveals itself, which makes them surprisingly companionable to hang.
