About Alexander Evgenievich Yakovlev

Few twentieth-century artists drew with the precision and authority of this Russian-born traveler, whose sharply observed portraits and ethnographic studies bridge classical academic training and modernist curiosity. Born in St. Petersburg in 1887 and trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts, he made his name through two legendary expeditions with André Citroën across Africa and Asia in the 1920s, producing hundreds of drawings and paintings that documented people and places few European artists had ever recorded firsthand. His sanguine portraits, in particular, carry a Renaissance gravity. For anyone drawn to draftsmanship of real rigor and a sensibility shaped by genuine encounter, his images hold quiet, lasting force.
