About Adriaen Hanneman

Trained in The Hague before crossing the Channel in the 1620s, this Dutch portraitist spent over a decade in London absorbing the polished elegance of Anthony van Dyck, whose influence shaped nearly everything he painted afterward. He returned home in 1640 and became the portraitist of choice for the exiled Stuart court and Dutch aristocracy, co-founding the Confrerie Pictura in 1656. His allegorical and genre pieces, less common than his portraits, carry the same silvery palette and quiet refinement that defined his sitters. For collectors drawn to the restraint of seventeenth-century Dutch painting without the heavy moralism of his contemporaries, his work offers a lighter, more intimate register.
