About Thomas Sully

Few painters shaped the look of early American portraiture quite like this English-born Philadelphian, whose fluid brushwork and flattering light made him the go-to portraitist for the young republic's merchants, presidents, and stage actors. Trained partly under Benjamin West in London and influenced by Thomas Lawrence's romantic elegance, he produced more than 2,000 portraits across a career spanning the first half of the nineteenth century, including a famous 1838 portrait of the young Queen Victoria. His narrative and literary scenes, less seen than his portraits, reveal a quieter storyteller working in soft tonal washes that still feel surprisingly modern and intimate today.
