About John Linnell

Few English landscape painters bridged the Romantic and Victorian eras as quietly as this one. Born in 1792, he trained under John Varley alongside William Mulready, but the formative relationship was with William Blake, whom he supported financially in his final years and whose Book of Job engravings he helped bring to print. His own work moved between sharp-eyed portraiture and pastoral landscapes thick with English weather - beech woods, harvest fields, fishing boys lost in afternoon light. He outlived most of his generation, dying in 1882, and his landscapes still read as the genuine article: rural England observed by someone who actually walked through it.
