About Edward Mitchell Bannister

One of the first African American painters to win a major national award, he took the bronze medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition for his landscape Under the Oaks—though the judges famously tried to rescind it once they saw him in person. Born in New Brunswick in 1828 and largely self-taught, he settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where he became a founding member of the Providence Art Club in 1880. His tonal landscapes and pastoral scenes carry the soft, atmospheric influence of the Barbizon School. For viewers drawn to quiet, painterly nature studies with real historical weight, his work rewards a long look.
