About Alfred Henry Maurer

One of the first American painters to commit fully to European modernism, he made a decisive break around 1907, abandoning the polished Whistlerian portraiture that had won him a medal in Paris for the hot color and flattened space of Fauvism. Born in New York in 1868, he spent his most productive years in France alongside Matisse's circle before returning home, where his later work pushed into Cubist-inflected portraits and still lifes that anticipated American abstraction by decades. For collectors drawn to the moment American art turned modern, his paintings sit at the exact hinge - figurative roots, fractured surfaces, and a restless intelligence working things out in paint.
